Understanding holiday pay
Holiday Pay for Bank Workers
As a bank worker, your holiday pay works differently than it would if you were a substantive member of staff. This guide will help you to understand how your holiday pay is paid to you, and what will happen if you take time off work as a bank worker.
How am I paid my holiday pay?
As a bank worker, your holiday pay is paid to you upfront, and rolled up in your weekly payments. This means that you receive your holiday pay as you go, as opposed to being paid it when you are off. You will see this every week on your payslip as a separate line labelled “WTD Pay”. It will be shown on your payslip as a lump sum, and will not be broken down into hours.
How is my holiday pay calculated?
Your holiday entitlement is paid based on the number of hours that you work and the grade at which you are working. Holiday pay is calculated by changing the Working Time Regulations entitlement of 28 days per year (including bank holidays) into a percentage. This works out to 12.07%. For every hour that you work on the bank, you will be paid 12.07% of that hourly rate per hour as holiday pay.
How can I take time off work?
As a bank worker, you are a flexible worker – one of the benefits of bank work for many bank workers is this flexibility. This means you can often take time off in ways that substantive workers cannot.
If you want to take time off work, you should first notify the Bookings Team who have placed you. They will be able to take a note of your availability.
If you are in a line of work, or in a placement, such as an admin & clerical worker, or a cleaner, you should also speak to your supervisor or line manager before you book any time off to make them aware of the dates. Please make sure you also still let the bookings team know.
Will I be paid if I take time off work?
Bank shifts that you do not work will not be paid separately in the same way that a permanent member of staff would receive paid annual leave. This is because you have already been paid your holiday pay. Because you are paid your holiday pay each week as you go, time booked off as a bank worker will be unpaid.
